Messenger of God new God at the B.O.

msg movie

What would you guess is the top grosser of 2015 uptill now? ‘Shamitabh’ starring Amitabh Bachan and Dhanush; or Akshay Kumar’s ‘Baby?’ If not these two then definitely current heart throb Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Roy’.

No, shockingly it is none of these big productions that were sold lavishly. It is a movie that is, catch your breath – produced by, directed by, written by, distributed by, music composed by, cinematography by, songs sung by and acted by, one man/ superman/ Godman -Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, better known as the Dera Sacha Sauda chief, a very popular Godman of Punjab. Who better to act in and as ‘Messenger of God?’

Within a week of its release it has overcrossed films made by popular, but mortal men mentioned above and is marching towards the magic figure of 100 crores.

But this is the least of its achievements : consider these –

The trailor of the film was released on 19th December 2014 and crossed one million views on YouTube within 24 hours.

The world record opening – this movie was too big to be accomodated in any theatre anywhere in the world. On 16th Jan 2015 MSG premiered at Leisure Valley ground, a large park in Gurgaon city used for exhibitions and conventions. A team from Asia Book and India book of records recorded the number of people gathered to view it as 1,57, 231!! Karan Johar – tum saat janam me bhi yeh record tod nahi paoge.

Ofcourse, as usual critics understood nothing of the intrinsic value of this divine presentation – some of them gave it 0 out of 5 stars and reported that watching it was the biggest torment they had endured in their (sinful?) lives. The non believers who gave the film 0 stars are Indian Express, DNA and NDTV.

Despite their carpings, the film has seen a world wide release on 13th February and can be viewed in Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Malyalam and Marathi.

Who are the other in the star cast did you ask?

Well, the movie has a cast of 1 million, 3 hundred-thousand real actors. bolThe cast had almost no training in films or acting. For the song ‘Never Ever’ about 125,000 performers continued their shot for three days. Despite this huge ensemble the movie was completed in 67 days.

It did have some hiccups with the censor board who refused to clear it after first viewing on some silly reasons like Singh calling himself God. But the appelate tribunal of film certification saw the light and gave the release a green signal.
