Olympian shuttler Nikhil Kanetkar to grace inaugural function

Nagpur: A badminton tournament for media persons is being organised in city. The Gaikwad Patil International School-SJAN Media Badminton Tournament will be held at Nagpur University’s Subhedar Hall from April 20 to 22. The 3-day tournament will be inaugurated by Olympian shuttler Nikhil Kanetkar at 11 am on Saturday.

In the badminton tournament held last year, Nagpur Today’s Farhan Kazi had displayed his sporting talent excellently.

Nikhil Kanetkar had represented India in the 2004 Athens Olympics. In the first round of men’s singles, he defeated Spain’s Sergio Llopis. But he had to taste defeat at the hands of Denmark’s Peter Gade in the pre-quarterfinal.

Apart from Olympics, Kanetkar represented India in Thomas Cup, All England Open, Swiss Open, French Open, Asian Games, World Championship, Commonwealth Games, SAF Games and a number of other tournaments. Currently, Kanetkar is playing role of an ace commentator and columnist.

Men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles events will be organised during the annual tournament. In mixed doubles, newspaper employees can play with their spouses. Cash prizes and trophies will be given to the winners, runners up and semi-finalists.

The entry for singles is Rs 30 and Rs 50 for doubles. Matches will be played with Yonex feather shuttles. Last date for entry is April 18 and draws will be declared on April 19.
