Nagpur: Nagpur police have invoked the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against five alleged members of a criminal gang operating in the Sadar area, following a probe into their criminal activities and past record.
The accused have been identified as Shakeel Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan, a resident of Goa Colony, Sadar, along with Sujal Joseph Paul, Sajid Sheikh Abdul Basit Sheikh, Salim Abdul Gaffar Khan and Raja Abdul Gaffar Khan.

According to police, the action follows an alleged attempt to kill 24-year-old Lucky Naresh Dasar, a resident of Gaddigodam, on June 20. The accused allegedly attacked Dasar with sticks and a knife and also attempted to set him on fire.
Sadar police had registered a case against the accused under various sections, including those relating to attempt to murder.
During the investigation, police examined the criminal antecedents of the accused and found, according to officials, that several serious cases had previously been registered against them. These allegedly include offences related to attempt to murder, assault, rioting and violations of the Arms Act.
Police said their investigation indicated that the accused were allegedly operating in an organised manner and were involved in repeated criminal activities, creating fear among residents of the locality.
Based on the investigation, Sadar police officials and the probe team prepared a proposal seeking action under MCOCA. The proposal was forwarded through DCP Zone-II Annapurna Singh to senior police authorities.
After the proposal received the necessary approval, MCOCA provisions were invoked against all five accused.
Further investigation has been entrusted to the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Sadar Division.
Police said the action is part of efforts to crack down on organised criminal groups and prevent repeat offenders from creating fear in the city.
