Marathoner Akash Uke ends life

WhatsApp-Image-20160608Nagpur: A pall of gloom descended over the sports fraternity as the startling news of suicide by well known marathoner, 22-year-old Akash Gyaneshwar Uke, spread like wild fire in the city on Tuesday.

A resident of Wakilpeth Hazarewadi in Seraspeth, Akash, was the star long-distance runner of Central India.

According to information, Akash consumed poison on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday at around 1 am. He was rushed to GMCH in critical condition by his family when they saw Akash’s condition deteriorating rapidly. While undergoing treatment, Akash lost the race for life at 11.20 am on Tuesday. His sudden death has shocked the sportspersons of Central India. Though rumours are abound why Akash committed suicide, police has not confirmed anything.

An excellent marathon runner, Akash trained under coach Anthony in the beginning. Under coach Anthony’s guidance, Akash excelled in 5,000 meter and 10,000 meter race, as he practiced arduously at Reshimbagh ground. In 2015, Akash took interest in long-distance running and topped amongst Indians at the Kolkata Marathon.

He was ranked in top-10 in half as well as full marathon runners. Akash also practiced under the guidance of noted coach Anna Kane at Nav Maharashtra Krida Mandal and won district level ‘best athlete’ award.
