Man who banged his newborn on GMCH floor to death gets lifer

Nagpur: Additional Sessions Judge G P Deshmukh on Monday awarded rigorous life imprisonment to Girish alias Shrikant Gondane after the charges of killing his one-day-old son in Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) Nagpur were proved against him in the court.

A resident of Sawardi, Nandgaon Peth, district Amravati, Girish Gondane (32) and his wife Prateeksha (25) had a love marriage in 2021. After the marriage, he often used to suspect her fidelity. Though they used to quarrel frequently, Prateeksha conceived. During pregnancy, her condition started deteriorating. She was admitted to a hospital in Amravati. She was then referred to GMCH, Nagpur, where she delivered a baby boy.

After the delivery, Prateeksha was shifted to Ward No 46. Around 6 pm on December 31, 2022, her husband Girish alias Shrikant landed up at GMCH. He again picked up a quarrel with Prateeksha suspecting her fidelity. After heated exchanges between them, Girish alias Shrikant banged the newborn on the floor of the hospital’s ward in a fit of rage. Onlookers snatched the baby from him before he could do any more harm. Nurses then immediately shifted the infant to the Intensive Care Unit. Later, the baby boy succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

Following a complaint lodged by Jeevankala Naresh Meshram (50), mother of Prateeksha, Ajni Police had registered a case under Sections 302, 307, 323 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Girish alias Shrikant Gondane and arrested them on January 1, 2023.

Assistant Police Inspector AT Khandare investigated the case and filed a chargesheet against the accused Girish. As the charges were substantiated against Girish, the court sentenced him to rigorous life imprisonment with a fine of Rs 10,000 for the offence under Section 302 of the IPC.

Additional Public Prosecutor Kranti Shaikh (Neware) represented the State. Adv S G Gawai was the defence counsel.
