
Nagpur: Crime Branch Unit No. 5 arrested a 30-year-old man for illegally possessing a country-made firearm and live cartridges during a patrolling operation in the Mankapur police station limits on Tuesday.
According to police, between 3.30 pm and 5.30 pm on January 6, 2026, Crime Branch personnel received specific information that a man identified as Deepak Chauhan, a resident of Ujwal Nagar near Raj Tower on Godhani Road, was illegally keeping a firearm at his residence.
Acting on the tip-off, the police conducted a raid at the specified location in the presence of panch witnesses. The accused identified himself as Deepak Sureshsingh Chauhan (30), a resident of Ujwal Nagar, Zingabai Takli, Mankapur. During the search of his house, police recovered one lethal country-made firearm and two live 12-bore cartridges.
The seized weapons and ammunition, valued at approximately Rs 34,000, were confiscated. Police said the accused was found possessing the firearm with the intention of committing a cognisable offence and had violated prohibitory orders.
A case has been registered at Mankapur Police Station under Sections 3 and 25 of the Arms Act, along with Section 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act. The accused has been arrested and handed over to Mankapur police along with the seized material for further action.
The operation was carried out under the guidance of Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravindrakumar Singal, Joint CP Navinchandra Reddy, Additional CP (Crime) Vasant Pardeshi, DCP (Detection) Rahul Maknikar and ACP (Crime Branch) Abhijit Patil. The action was executed by PI Vinayak Golhe, API Vijay Gite, and their crime branch team. Further investigation is in progress.
