Man Arrested for Allegedly Demanding ₹5,000 Monthly Extortion from 74-Year-Old Tea Stall Owner

Nagpur: In a swift action against extortion, Wathoda Police arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly demanding a monthly protection fee from a senior citizen running a tea stall in the Khapri area of Nagpur.

The complainant, Kishor Narayan Gurav (74), a resident of Sambhaji Nagar, New Narsala, operates a tea shop named “Comfort of Chai No. 2” near Payal Wine Shop at Kharbi under Wathoda police station limits.

According to police, at around 2.50 pm on February 22, 2026, the accused Sachin Roopchand Wasnik (35), along with his associate Pranay Besarkar, allegedly entered the shop, abused the elderly owner, vandalised the counter, and demanded Rs 5,000 per month as extortion. The duo allegedly threatened to kill Gurav if the money was not paid and if he wished to continue running his business.

Based on the complaint, Sub Inspector Sagar Lagad registered an offence under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to extortion, criminal intimidation, assault, and damage to property. Accused Wasnik has been arrested, while efforts are underway to trace the second suspect. Further investigation is in progress.
