Mumbai/New Delhi/Nagpur: Maharashtra has recorded the highest number of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) shutting down in the country over the past three financial years, even as it continues to lead India in new MSME registrations. The latest data presented in Parliament also reveals a steady rise in MSME closures in Nagpur district.
According to information tabled in the Rajya Sabha by Union MSME Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, 28,764 MSME units in Maharashtra were reported as closed between 2023-24 and 2025-26, the highest among all states. During the same period, Maharashtra also registered 7,557,276 new MSMEs, retaining its position as the country’s leading state for new enterprise registrations.

Across India, 121,805 MSME units shut down during the three-year period despite the registration of more than 63.81 million new enterprises, highlighting the growing challenges faced by small businesses.
Rising Employment Concerns
The increase in business closures has had a significant impact on employment.
Government data shows:
2025-26: 62,747 MSMEs closed, affecting approximately 370,000 jobs.
2024-25: 39,446 MSMEs closed, impacting around 260,000 jobs.
Rising input costs, financing constraints, market competition, and operational challenges have been cited as the primary reasons behind the growing number of closures.
Nagpur Sees Sharp Rise in MSME Shutdowns
Nagpur has witnessed a consistent increase in MSME closures registered on the Udyam Portal as per data avilable on portal.

A total of 1,425 MSME units in Nagpur were registered as closed or shut down between 2021-22 and 2025-26, with the annual figure rising nearly tenfold over the five-year period.
Maharashtra: Highest Closures, Highest Registrations
While Maharashtra leads the country in MSME closures, it also remains India’s largest destination for new businesses.
Between 2023-24 and 2025-26, the state recorded 7.56 million new MSME registrations, reflecting strong entrepreneurial activity. However, the rising number of shutdowns suggests that many businesses continue to struggle with sustainability after establishment.
