Nagpur: In a major crackdown on idle industrial assets, the Maharashtra Government has reclaimed 39 long-vacant industrial plots across the Nagpur Division and thrown them open for fresh allotment, signalling a determined push to free up locked land, attract new investments and accelerate industrial growth in the region.

Making the announcement in the State Legislature on Friday, Industries Minister Uday Samant said the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has resumed possession of nine industrial plots in Hingna and 30 in Butibori after the allottees failed to establish industrial units despite being allotted the land. The reclaimed plots have now been placed on MIDC’s Milaap portal for fresh allocation to genuine entrepreneurs.

Samant was replying to a starred question raised in the Legislative Council by MLCs Abhijit Wanjari, Dr Parinay Fuke, Pravin Darekar and others.

The Government also revealed the alarming extent of industrial stagnation in the region. A total of 153 industrial units in the Hingna and Butibori industrial estates have ceased operations, leaving nearly 270 acres of valuable industrial land lying unproductive. Across Nagpur, Wardha, Bhandara and Gondia districts, as many as 301 industrial plots are occupied by units that have shut down due to financial distress, legal disputes and other operational issues.

To address the issue, MIDC has issued notices to all defaulting plot holders, directing them to restart industrial activities. The Minister made it clear that where industries fail to revive operations within the stipulated period, MIDC will proceed with resumption of the land in accordance with its policy, paving the way for its reallocation to new investors.

Responding to concerns over alleged unauthorised transactions involving industrial land, Samant clarified that MIDC does not permit the outright sale of industrial plots. Any transfer or lease of an allotted plot is allowed only after obtaining prior approval from the Corporation and strictly in accordance with the prescribed policy.

The issue has drawn considerable attention in the Legislature, with members expressing concern that hundreds of acres of industrial land have remained locked in defunct units for years, depriving aspiring entrepreneurs of opportunities, delaying fresh investments, and hampering industrial expansion and employment generation in the Nagpur region. The Government’s decision to reclaim unused plots is being viewed as a significant step towards unlocking dormant industrial assets and ensuring that scarce industrial land is put to productive use.
