Nagpur: The Yashodhra Nagar Police have arrested the main accused who had been absconding in connection with a violent clash triggered by a love affair dispute in Nagpur. The accused, identified as Shanu alias Golu Vaidya, was apprehended while allegedly carrying a country-made pistol and a knife. Police have also invoked the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in the case.

According to police, the incident took place on the night of May 16 behind Regal Celebration near NIT, where two groups clashed over an ongoing dispute related to a romantic relationship.

Complainant Rehan Iqbal Sheikh was present at the spot along with his friends when Shanu Vaidya, Karan Nimje, and 10 to 12 of their associates allegedly arrived. Police said the dispute had been brewing for nearly six months over the relationship between Rehan’s friend Amit and a young woman.

During the confrontation, the accused allegedly abused Rehan, attacked him with a knife with the intention to kill, and threatened him by brandishing a revolver. The injured Rehan was rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital (Medical Hospital) for treatment.

Following the incident, Yashodhra Nagar Police registered cases against members of both groups under relevant sections of the law and arrested several accused. However, the prime accused, Shanu alias Golu Vaidya, had been on the run since the incident.

During routine patrolling, police spotted Shanu riding a two-wheeler on the road between Automatic Chowk and Ita Bhatti Chowk. After stopping and searching him, officers recovered a country-made pistol and a knife. A verification of police records confirmed that he was the wanted accused in the earlier assault case, leading to his immediate arrest.

Police officials said that MCOCA provisions have also been applied in the case considering the nature of the offences and the criminal background involved. Further investigation is underway by the Yashodhra Nagar Police.
