Nagpur: The entire force of Nagpur police is on alert mode and ready to tackle any deterioration of the law and order situation after the MNS chief Raj Thackeray reiterated his “May 3 deadline” warning for the removal of loudspeakers, which he termed a nuisance, atop mosques.

Nagpur police have tightened security with deployment of 7,000 personnel for bandobast duty on Wednesday in the backdrop of MNS chief Raj Thackeray’s ultimatum that all loudspeakers should be removed from mosques and temples.

Commissioner of Police (CP) Amitesh Kumar chaired a meeting of senior police officials and planned a tight bandobast to maintain law and order in the Second Capital. CP Kumar said that a series of peace committee meetings of members of all religions were already conducted by the police last month. “We are taking all precautionary measures and keeping watch on the antisocial elements. Anyone acting against the law, will be dealt with an iron hand,” the Top Cop warned.

The Quick Response Team and Riot Control Police are put on high alert. Also a company of State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) would be deployed in sensitive areas. About 239 anti-socials were slapped with notices under Section 149 of CrPC; 49 notices were issued under Section 151 (3) of CrPC and 639 anti-socials were given notices under other preventive action. As many as 1,204 temples, 233 mosques and 400 Buddha Viharas are located in Nagpur city. The cops have intensified patrolling from Tuesday night under the supervision of Zonal DCPs, the CP said.

According to media reports, all police leaves have been cancelled. Raj Thackeray reiterated his May 3 deadline for the removal of loudspeakers atop mosques at a rally in Aurangabad, warning that he “won’t be responsible for what all happens after that”.
