Nagpur: A 65-year-old man was arrested for allegedly murdering his wife following a dispute over liquor and food in the Ranala area under the jurisdiction of New Kamptee Police Station on Sunday night.
The deceased has been identified as Shyamwati Umashankar Watti (60). The incident occurred at around 9:30 pm in Khanwani Layout.
According to police, the couple, originally from Balaghat district in Madhya Pradesh, had been working as construction labourers in Ranala for the past two years.
On Sunday evening, after returning home from work, Shyamwati was preparing dinner while her husband, Umashankar Watti, had brought two 90 ml bottles of country liquor. An argument broke out after one of the bottles allegedly went missing. As the dispute escalated, Umashankar allegedly slammed his wife’s head against the ground, causing her to suffer serious injuries.
The couple’s 10-year-old grandson, who was present at the scene, raised an alarm, prompting nearby residents to rush to the house. The incident was reported to their contractor, Roshan Halmare. Shyamwati was immediately taken to Kamptee Sub-District Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
After receiving information, New Kamptee Police reached the spot, arrested the accused, and registered a case. Police suspect that the woman died due to a severe head injury sustained during the assault following the dispute over liquor. However, the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem examination.
The deceased is survived by three daughters, one son, and several grandchildren.
Further investigation is being carried out by Police Sub-Inspector Akshay Jhagade under the supervision of Senior Police Inspector Mahesh Andhale.
