Nagpur: Lenovo known to be the world’s No.1 Personal Computer player and an emerging PC+ leader, has announced an initiative to jumpstart India’s computer penetration, which is currently at 10% and is the lowest among developing countries like Vietnam (16%), South Africa (18%), Turkey (49%) and Malaysia (64%). This programme is a significant step from Lenovo towards the larger ‘Digital India’ programme that aims at transforming India into a digitally empowered society.

Lenovo is launching this initiative in Nagpur and the rest of Maharashtra which is a high-potential market owing to its large youth population who are the primary consumers of computers today. Lenovo is also providing an end-to-end package to make computers more accessible to the youth across these markets. This includes an attractive finance scheme, PC accessories and huge-scale promotion to drive awareness.

India is set to become one of the world’s youngest countries in the next five years but the growing number of youth who do not have access to a computer is becoming an issue of national interest. To address the issue, Lenovo is offering financing support on laptops and AIOs, where consumers can own a PC with down payments starting as low as Rs 3000 and the rest in interest free EMIs. The payment can be broken up across multiple EMIs with no interest fee.

Speaking about the initiative during the press-meet, General Manager of Home and Small Business, West, Lenovo India Pankaj Harjai said that as the global PC leader, they want to address the problem of computer penetration in the country. Lenovo has seen success in driving initiatives of this nature in large, emerging markets such as China and we want to replicate this in India. We chose Nagpur and the rest of Maharashtra as one of the first few regions, as it is a growing and significant market for Lenovo. The new 2-in-1 YOGA series is launched with an aim to make computers more accessible and affordable for students. We have introduced this initiative in other states like Gujarat, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and plan to roll this out in the rest of India too.”

‎National Product Manager of Consumer Notebooks, Lenovo India Hiral Somaiya further added that they have understood the consumers’ key barriers towards computer adoption and designed a programme to address them. Lenovo is looking at a comprehensive 360 degree marketing outreach that includes advertising and a student contact program through college activation. In the past, there have been such initiatives but they have been fragmented in nature.  This is a complex, multi-sectorial problem and requires a mammoth initiative to address the challenges. Our program is a call to action to make technology all-pervasive and we welcome others to partner us in our endeavor.”

Programme details are as under:

  • Lenovo is offering a range of fully loaded, great value computers across AIOs and laptops starting at Rs. 24,990
  • For the finance scheme, Lenovo has tied up with Bajaj Fin Serv to offer customers a 9 EMI scheme, divided into a down payment of 2 months EMI, a processing fee of Rs. 749; and payback balance in 7 EMIs with 0% interest on EMIs
  • Lenovo has introduced offers on essential PC accessories which will also be available for consumers in Maharashtra.

This programme has been launched in the wake of the Digital India initiative, which aims at transforming India’s IT profile.  Lenovo’s objective to provide greater access to computers will be a step towards fulfilling one of the nine pillars of the Digital India initiative namely ‘IT for Jobs’. The offer will be available across Nagpur and 42 towns in Maharashtra.
