Nagpur: A knife attack near Ayachit Mandir in Nagpur triggered brief panic on Monday morning as the injured man and the alleged attacker ran towards the main road around the time when the convoy of RSS chief Dr Mohan Bhagwat was passing through the area.
The incident initially created confusion because Bhagwat’s convoy was travelling from the RSS headquarters towards the airport and had passed through the Ayachit Mandir crossing shortly before the altercation.

However, police have categorically clarified that the knife attack had no connection whatsoever with Bhagwat, his convoy or his movement through the area. Preliminary investigation has indicated that the incident arose from a family dispute involving a woman and a custody-related issue concerning her child.
Attack in lane after convoy passed
According to police, Bhagwat’s convoy had already crossed the Ayachit Mandir area and proceeded towards the airport when a confrontation broke out in a lane near the temple.
During the altercation, Akash Dhomne was allegedly attacked with a knife. Following the assault, the injured Akash and the alleged attacker, identified as Ganesh Wankhede, came running towards the main road.
Their sudden appearance on the road created commotion for a brief period, with people initially linking the incident to the movement of the RSS chief’s convoy.
Police, however, said the two developments were unrelated.
Family dispute escalates over child’s custody
Preliminary investigation has revealed that the incident was linked to a longstanding family dispute.
According to police, the woman at the centre of the dispute had allegedly been living separately from her husband, Ganesh Wankhede, for about a year. She was reportedly staying with Akash Dhomne along with her two children.
A dispute had already been going on between the two sides over the children.
The situation reportedly escalated after the woman’s 13-year-old son left home without informing anyone on Friday. He was subsequently traced to Bhandara and brought back.
The recovery of the boy reportedly intensified the dispute over his custody.
Police said Ganesh Wankhede reached a lane near Ayachit Mandir on Monday morning, close to the woman’s parental home. Relatives from both sides also gathered there, and an argument soon escalated into a physical confrontation.
Injured man taken to hospital
During the confrontation, Akash was allegedly attacked with a knife and suffered serious injuries.
The woman reportedly helped the injured Akash reach the main road on an Activa scooter. From there, he was taken to a hospital in an autorickshaw and admitted for treatment.
Police were informed about the incident after Akash was taken to hospital.
Acting on the information, police detained Ganesh Wankhede and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the assault. CCTV footage from the area has also emerged and is being examined by investigators to establish the exact sequence of events.
Police are also questioning those present at the spot and examining the role of other persons who may have been involved in the altercation.
Police rule out link with Bhagwat convoy
The incident assumed significance because it occurred in the vicinity of the route taken by Dr Mohan Bhagwat’s convoy.
Police have, however, made it clear that there was no security breach involving the RSS chief and no connection between the knife attack and his convoy.
Investigators have so far treated the case as a family dispute that turned violent. Police are now reconstructing the entire sequence of events, examining CCTV footage and gathering statements from those involved to determine the precise circumstances of the attack and the role of others in the incident.
