Kolkata woman alleges forced conversion, molestation at Kamptee dargah

Six booked, including dargah's spiritual head and his wife, after victim alleges assault, confinement and murder bid

Nagpur: A cloud of serious criminal allegations has descended over a prominent dargah in Old Kamptee after a woman from Kolkata accused the shrine’s spiritual head and several associates of attempting to forcibly convert her religion, molesting her, illegally confining her and even trying to eliminate her when she resisted.

The allegations, which have sent shockwaves through religious and social circles, surfaced after the woman approached police authorities and narrated a harrowing account of events that allegedly unfolded at Huzur Mariam Amma Dargah near Gadeghat in Old Kamptee.

Acting on the complaint, Kanhan Police have registered an FIR against six accused and initiated an investigation. Those named in the case include the dargah’s spiritual head Taji Janviruddin, popularly known as “Baba”, his wife Taji Mustafafiruddin Faiz, Tejas Khobragade, Bashra Fatema Taji, Malla Dhule and other associates.

According to police records, the complainant is a resident of the Dum Dum locality in Kolkata and had been visiting the shrine for spiritual purposes for some time. She had reportedly travelled to Kamptee in April to participate in a religious programme being organised at the dargah.

However, what was expected to be a spiritual visit allegedly turned into a nightmare. In her complaint, the woman stated that on the night of April 18, several persons at the shrine attempted to pressure her into accepting another religion. She alleged that when she firmly refused, the accused subjected her to physical assault and molestation.

The woman further alleged that the situation escalated dangerously after she resisted the conversion attempts. She claimed that efforts were made to kill her and that she was unlawfully confined within the premises, preventing her from seeking help or escaping.

According to the complaint, she managed to flee from the location the following day under difficult circumstances and immediately left for Kolkata by train. After reaching home on April 21, she reportedly underwent medical treatment at a private hospital for the injuries and trauma she allegedly suffered during the incident.

Following her recovery, the woman approached Dum Dum Police Station on May 3 and lodged a formal complaint. Since the alleged offences had occurred in Maharashtra, Kolkata Police registered a Zero FIR and subsequently transferred the case to Kanhan Police for further action.

Police sources confirmed that the case documents were received recently, following which a fresh FIR was registered under relevant sections. Investigators are now examining the allegations, collecting documentary evidence and verifying the sequence of events narrated by the complainant.

Officials said the investigation remains at a preliminary stage and the victim’s detailed statement is yet to be recorded by Kanhan Police. Authorities have therefore refrained from drawing any conclusions regarding the allegations until all facts are thoroughly examined.

“The case has been transferred to us by Dum Dum Police. The victim’s detailed statement is yet to be recorded here. At this stage, it would be inappropriate to comment on the exact circumstances. A comprehensive investigation is underway,” a police official said.

The case has triggered considerable attention due to the gravity of the allegations, which include forced religious conversion, molestation, wrongful confinement and an alleged attempt to murder. Police are expected to question the accused and scrutinise all available evidence as part of the ongoing probe.

It is important to note that the allegations are based on the complainant’s statement and the investigation is currently underway. The guilt or innocence of the accused will be determined only after a thorough police probe and subsequent legal proceedings.
