The development is expected to significantly enhance Nagpur’s historic heritage and tourism. Located in the central part of Nagpur near the Senior and Junior Bhosale Palaces from the Bhosale era, Kalyaneshwar Temple is an important place of worship for devotees. The headquarters of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is also located close to the temple, drawing large numbers of tourists and devotees from across India and abroad throughout the year.

Pravin Datke said Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had also demanded that the government undertake the development of Kalyaneshwar Temple.

Major festivals, fairs and religious processions in the city pass along the route of this temple, resulting in heavy crowds. Against this backdrop, Datke said at the meeting that it was essential to equip the temple परिसर with modern amenities. He also said that including elevated parking in the temple development plan would increase vehicle capacity.

Proposed development plan

The proposed development plan will transform Kalyaneshwar Temple, the Nagarkhana and the Mahal area. The key works include:

  • Large parking facility: Spacious parking on the lower floor to manage crowds.
  • Multipurpose hall: A modern hall for religious and cultural programmes.
  • Renovation and beautification: Development of the temple’s main spire and the premises of the Ganesh, Mahadev and Hanuman temples.
  • Modern facilities: Construction of an updated observatory and a yoga centre for devotees.
  • Environment-friendly initiative: A rainwater harvesting project for water management.
  • Other facilities: Modern electrification, clean toilets and an attractive redesign of the premises.

The development proposal is estimated at ₹78.50 crore. Datke has sought a fund of ₹100 crore, including construction of the spire and upgraded parking facilities.

Datke expressed confidence that the development plan would contribute significantly to the development of the Mahal area as well as to the historic beauty and tourism appeal of Nagpur.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Chief Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, District Collector Kumar Ashirwad and officials from the Tourism Development Department were present at the meeting.
