Kalamna cops raid birthday party of cricket bookies, 28 persons arrested

Nagpur: A birthday party organised at a lawn under the Kalamna police station limits took an unexpected turn on Saturday night as the police conducted a raid on the premises suspecting gambling activities.

However, the investigation revealed no evidence of gambling but the police found guests consuming alcohol and hookah without permission. As a result, 28 persons were arrested by the police.

The arrested accused are identified as Vijender Jawaharlal Chugh, Ashish Kubde, Sanjay Amesar, Abhishek Padhe, Girish Sugandh, Vishal Thutheja, Deepesh Sachdev, Ashish Raut, Yogesh Gehi, Himanshu Chellani, Aakas Nagpal, Naveen Muniyar, Hemant Pahuja, Sushant Parmar, Dipesh Amesar, Jai Chawla, Vikram Chugh, Arshad Khan, Tehseem Ali, Amit Gupta, Ravi Chugh, Shubham Kalasak, Lankesh Choudhary, Amit Choudhary, Narendra Gehi, Bhavesh Motiani, and Vicky Motiani.

A significant number of the arrested persons are reportedly involved in the cricket betting business, with some also being businessmen, said police. According to police, the party, held at the Riwaz Lawn of Kalamna, was organised to celebrate the birthday of Ashish Kubde. Prior to the raid, the police had received a tip-off that many bookies and gamblers were expected to participate in the event, raising suspicions about illegal cricket betting.

During the operation, the police seized liquor, hookah material, and substances worth approximately Rs 1 lakh. Additionally, the police confiscated a substantial amount of goods, including 36 mobile phones and 22 four-wheelers, valued at Rs 1.59 crore, from the arrested persons.

A case under provisions of Maharashtra Prohibition Act and COTPA was registered by Kalamna police. Under the guidance of DCP Zone V Shravan Dath, ACP Santosh Khandekar, the arrest was made by Crime Branch Unit 5 PI Sareen Durge, Kalamna PI Manohar Kotnake, PI Vishwas Pullarwar, API Amol Tambe and staff including Wankhede, Mahesh, Mutkare, Vishal Ankalwar, Chandrashekhar Yadav, Ashish Baralawar, Atul Shirbhate, Mangesh Porate, Waseem, Maruti, Sandip Dhale, Sonu Shende, Mangesh Lohi, Anil Jadhav and Suraj Randive.
