Nagpur News: The Departments of Statistics & Mathematics of Institute of Science, Nagpur are organizing a two-day National Conference on Statistics, Mathematics and their Applications (COSMA) on January 3 and 4, 2014 at the Institute of Science, Nagpur to celebrate the International Year of Statistics. The Conference is being co-sponsored by the International Indian Statistical Association, USA and the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM), DAE.
Mathematics and Statistics have become an integral part of almost every area of life including agriculture, engineering, medicine, management, as well as in the physical, chemical, biological and social sciences. The goal of this conference is to provide a common platform to leading academicians researchers and professionals working in the field of mathematics and statistics to share their knowledge about various aspects of these two important branches of science.
Dr. M.T. Bharambe, Director of Institute of Science, speaking to media, said the conference will provide an opportunity for technical discussions , reflections and exchange of ideas and perspectives in both theoretical and applied fields of mathematics besides exploring the potential of their applications in various interdisciplinary areas.
Around 250 researchers, scientists and students belonging to statistics and mathematics are expected to participate in the two-day deliberations. Participants from the fields of science, engineering, agriculture, NEERI, Kuwait are expected to participate.
The Convenor of the Conference Prof. K.S. Bhanu, Head of the Department of Statistics, informed that a special session called ‘Catch them Young’ has been arranged for the young students to increase the awareness of the power and impact of statistics on all aspects of society and nurture statistics as a profession where invited speakers will interact and guide the students about career and research opportunities in Statistics and Mathematics.
The conference will be inaugurated on January 3, 2014 at 9.45 a.m. Dr. R.M. Welukar, Vice Chancellor, University of Mumbai, will be the Chief Guest while Dr. Vilas Sapkal, Vice Chancellor, RTMNU will preside over the function. The guests of honour include Dr. Subrata Kundu, George Washington University, USA, Dr. K.C. Deshmukh, Dean, Science and Mathematics.
The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. T.E Raghunathan of University of Michigan, USA. He will speak on ‘ Mathematics to Mathematical Statistics to Biostatistics. This would be followed by an interesting talk on “Cricket Analytics” by Dr. Srinivas Bhogle , Director of TEOCO Software, Banglore.
Prof. K.S Bhanu H.O.D is the Convener of the Conference while Dr. G.L Waghmare is the Organizing Secretary.
