People’s commonest worries were addressed by the eminent experts in the field of blood banking like Dr. R. N. Makroo, Dr. Harish Warbhe and Dr Sanjay Parate, Prof & Head, Blood Bank, Super Specialty Hospital & Government Medical College, Nagpur. All aspects of Blood Donation like blood grouping, cross-matching, Universal Donor, Universal recipient, frequency of blood donations, blood components, risks of infections, NAT Testing, blood safety, and allied subjects were answered by the experts to increase the general knowledge about blood donation and break the myths and fears in minds of people.
The experts pointed out the following facts. One can voluntarily donate blood if healthy every 3 months until medically fit till the age of 65. ‘O’ is a universal donor group while ‘AB’ is a universal recipient. One should never use blood from blood relatives as there is host versus graft reactions which is wrongly shown in Bollywood movies. Cross matching is must before receiving blood. NAT (Nucleic Acid Test) is the latest method of ensuring that the blood is not contaminated with contagious infections like Hepatitis B, C, HIV etc. It is not necessary to give whole blood every time, components necessary should be used. One can only donate plasma, blood can not be stored for long durations but the components can be frozen. Donating blood is good for the heart. It is the noblest gesture and easiest way to do service to humanity.
noted social worker Mr. Narendra Satija anchored this program.
President Dr. Harish Warbhe appealed the people to actively participate in blood donation camps in large number and spread the movement of blood donation in the society so that there is no shortage of blood & no patient will either suffer or die for the want of blood. Hon. Secretary Dr. Ajay Ambade proposed the vote of thanks!
