India Celebrates 19th Anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas

New Delhi: India celebrates the 19th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas today. As on this date, in 1999, the Kargil misadventure ended with India getting victorious. Till date, this day is remembered in the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the country.

India took command of the high outposts on July 26, 1999 which had been lost to Pakistani intruders and the war was fought for more than 60 days.

To commemorate this day, wreath laying ceremony will be held today. However, celebrations were in order from Tuesday itself at the Drass War Memorial in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kargil. On the first day, tributes were paid to the War Heroes by laying wreath at the memorial.

Yesterday, the veterans of the war and serving heroes shared their experiences during the war at a function and there was a briefing on Operation Vijay battles.

Lt. Gen. (Retd) Mohindar Puri, who commanded 8 Mountain Division during the war shared his experience regarding the cumbersome battle and said the nation should remember the supreme sacrifice of those jawans who sacrificed their life to win the war in just 60 days and for remembering them. He added that one should not wait till Kargil Vijay Diwas to remember their sacrifice. It should be remembered every single day as they have given their youth for a safe and better tomorrow for the country, as per Daily Excelsior report.

Puri further said that Kargil-like situation would not happen in future as India is prepared. General Puri also said acknowledged the contribution of the locals and said they played a major role during the war.
