IIM Nagpur to provide reservation to economically weaker section

Nagpur: Honouring the Central government’s decision to introduce 10 per cent reservation for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) of the society in the General category in higher education, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur has decided to implement the same from the ensuing academic year 2019-20.

The intake for the 2019-21 batch of has been increased to 130, of which four students will be admitted under this provision. “We began implementing the scheme by increasing our intake to 130 for the year 2019-20 on account of infrastructure constraints. However, we will implement the full 10 per cent quota from as per the government guidelines,” said IIMN Director Prof L S Murty.

While the Centre has directed all the government undertakings and centrally funded educational institutions to implement this quota under the 124th Amendment Bill, 2019, standards for the implementation for the same in educational institutes have yet to be formulated. To facilitate the same, IIM Nagpur has provided shortlisted candidates with a format that allows them to detail their family income and assets, in order to be considered under the EWS quota. Guidelines for submitting information validated by competent authorities have been conveyed to the candidates. The admission portal on the IIMN website allows candidates to upload income and assets certificate, while also offering a window to make requisite changes.

Persons who are not covered under the scheme of reservation for SCs, STs and OBCs and whose family has a gross annual income below Rs 8 lakh per annum are considered as economically weaker to avail reservation facility. Income shall also include income from all sources i.e. salary, agriculture, business, profession, etc. for the financial year prior to the year of application. Also persons whose family owns or possesses any of the following assets shall be excluded from being identified as EWS, irrespective of the family income: 5 acres of agricultural land and above; residential flat of 1000 sq. ft. and above; residential plot of 100 sq. yards and above in notified municipalities; residential plot of 200 sq. yards and above in areas other than the notified municipalities.
