Nagpur | The Indian Institute of Management Nagpur (IIM Nagpur) continues to set benchmarks in environmental stewardship and sustainable campus development. On the occasion of World Sustainability Day, the institute reaffirmed its vision of creating a green and self-sustaining campus that aligns with India’s national goals for clean energy and responsible growth.
Nestled amid the semi-arid landscape of Maharashtra, the IIM Nagpur campus is a living example of sustainability in action. From its energy-efficient buildings and waste management systems to solar energy use and water conservation measures, the campus demonstrates how environmental responsibility can be seamlessly integrated into everyday institutional life.
At the center of this commitment stands IIM Nagpur’s Net Zero Campus initiative, powered by a 2MW ground-mounted solar plant with a capacity of 1,998 kW. Developed in collaboration with the Maharashtra State Electricity Commission, the facility ensures a cleaner, more reliable power source for the campus. With this achievement, IIM Nagpur will become only the second Indian Institute of Management in the country to attain Net Zero solar capability, marking a major step toward a sustainable future in higher education.
The institute’s campus design reflects its environmental ethos, with over 75,000 square meters of eco-friendly infrastructure. The buildings incorporate passive cooling systems, rainwater harvesting, and energy-efficient materials. The extensive landscape features native plant species that conserve biodiversity while minimizing water use. The campus also recycles treated water for gardening and sanitation, adopts drip irrigation for maximum efficiency, and has significantly reduced plastic usage through reusable bottles and dispensers.
Dr. Bhimaraya Metri, Director of IIM Nagpur, said, “Sustainability lies at the heart of IIM Nagpur’s philosophy and progress. We remain steadfast in our commitment to becoming a Net Zero campus powered entirely by solar energy, a milestone that position IIM Nagpur among India’s leading institutions driving sustainable transformation. As we move toward becoming only the second IIM in the country to achieve this distinction, we are reimagining higher education to harmonize academic excellence with environmental and social responsibility. IIM Nagpur’s smart campus has achieved a 4-Star GRIHA rating and the GRIHA Large Development Award (2023) for its innovative and sustainable design. Strategically positioned at the center of India, IIM Nagpur has convenient access from all regions while minimizing carbon footprint and associated environmental impact. Our ongoing initiatives in renewable energy, water conservation, and biodiversity restoration reflect this holistic commitment. Advancing this vision, our student-driven Ummeed Club continues to extend the institute’s sustainability mission beyond campus through meaningful community engagement and creating lasting social impact.”
IIM Nagpur stands as a model of green campus design. With over 8,000 trees planted, water recycling systems in place, and solar energy powering its daily operations, the institute demonstrates that sustainability is not just an academic concept but a way of life.
Further, IIM Nagpur is at the forefront of its social sustainability journey through its club Ummeed – The Community Outreach Club. IIM Nagpur has taken various initiatives in collaboration with UNICEF India, AIIMS Nagpur, and other prominent bodies to promote health and social well-being.
On World Sustainability Day, IIM Nagpur reaffirms its pledge to continue leading India’s transition toward a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future one campus, one community, and one initiative at a time.
