The Commercial Sex Workers who are living in the red-light area in Nagpur (also known as Ganga Jamuna), who could not pursue their basic or higher education due to various factors like poor financial conditions or other family pressures, have a reason to thank Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

In a unique initiative, the Nagpur Centre of IGNOU has proposed to reach out to the sex workers who couldn’t pursue higher education due to family pressure or financial reasons.

The IGNOU courses include Bachelor of Preparatory Education, (which is a vocational programme after the plus-two level). The course not only imparts professional training to the students but also makes them eligible for degree courses.

IGNOU is planning to reach out to the under-privileged, as a part of a long-term plan to educate Commercial Sex Workers and bring them out of the dark alleys into the mainstream of society.

Regional Director of Nagpur Centre of IGNOU Dr. Sivaswaroop said that a Non-Government Organization (NGO) and with Red Cross Society has been entrusted the job to families of sex workers.

The students will be trained and taught by teachers appointed by IGNOU. It will be the first initiative in Maharashtra by IGNOU. Only Study Centres of IGNOU in Kolkatta and Ahmedabad has such educational initiatives for sex workers.
