Recently, the Nagpur Book Club (NBC) hosted an engaging seminar where several notable books were decoded and discussed. During the event, Dinesh Dhawane reviewed Shabdon Ka Safar: Vol. 1, 2 and 3 by Ajit Wadnerkar; Pushpa Rathi presented The Roma: A Traveling History by Madeline Potter; Dr. Naznin Chimthanawala shared insights on You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay; Dr. Aakanksha Bele analyzed Who were the Shudras by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar; and Dr. Tejinder Singh Rawal delivered a brilliant decoding of Pure Invention: How Japan Made the Modern World by Matt Alt. This was my first interaction with the member of NBC and was a fantastic experience, would suggest all avid readers to explore joining NBC.

Inspired by Dr. Tejinder Singh Rawal’s insights from that session, the following article explores how those lessons apply to India’s creative and industrial future.

As Dr. Tejinder Singh Rawal brilliantly explained during the recent Nagpur Book Club seminar on Matt Alt’s Pure Invention, Japan won over the world not with heavy factories or military power, but by sharing pure imagination, unforgettable characters, and emotional stories. Instead of selling mere physical necessities, they sold a dream. Today, India stands at a very similar turning point in history. Our media and entertainment world, especially the gaming, animation, visual effects, and comics sectors, is changing fast. If India wants to move beyond the old “Made in India” factory mindset and truly lead the world, our creative industries must stop acting merely as backstage helpers for foreign studios and start creating original ideas and characters that people everywhere fall in love with.

When you look closely at how the entertainment world works today, the biggest lesson is that doing work for others can help you start, but only telling your own original stories can build an empire. For many years, Indian animation and gaming studios have earned a great global name by handling background art, technical coding, and digital rendering for massive Hollywood movies and international video games. But the Japanese example teaches us that a country cannot stay just a helper for Western media. Instead, Japanese creators took foreign art styles and filled them with their own local myths, unique feelings, and local art styles, which eventually gave birth to global hits like anime and manga. India has an endless treasure box of epic stories, rich folklore, modern city legends, and colourful local cultures. When our own local studios shift from simply drawing someone else’s projects to funding and writing their own original Indian worlds and characters, we will finally stop renting out our hard work and start owning the global spotlight.

This big change requires us to look inward before looking outward, understanding that Japan’s amazing creative boom did not start by trying to please foreign crowds first. It grew heavily from within, as Japanese creators-built products, comics, and video games that deeply connected with everyday local people who were dealing with fast-changing modern lifestyles. Their massive global success later on was simply a natural result of getting things right at home first. India has one of the largest digital and mobile user bases on the planet, with hundreds of millions of young people using smartphones every single day. Instead of trying to design games and cartoons meant only for Western tastes from day one, our developers should focus heavily on our own multi-language home market. Content that captures the real humour, local languages, and everyday dreams of youth in smaller Indian towns will have the real, honest punch needed to naturally win over players everywhere around the world.

Reaching this level also means we must bridge the gap between technical skill and pure artistic vision, especially since the global entertainment world is moving fast toward real-time computer graphics, artificial intelligence, and virtual production. Recent government support and digital hubs are giving our local creators a great platform to grow, but more support is required. However, pure technical skill alone will never build a cultural empire, because it takes a smooth mix of strong engineering talent and heartfelt design thinking. India’s massive pool of brilliant engineering minds needs to work closely with creative writers, artists, and game designers. When a new generation of creators starts looking at media not just as lines of computer code, but as a magical mix of art and human storytelling, India will firmly establish itself as an unstoppable creative-tech superpower.

Ultimately, none of this works without building the kind of deep, loyal community spirit that powered Japan’s cultural success through its vibrant otaku subculture. To understand this kind of intense craze, just think of the people who stand outside in long lines for hours, sometimes even overnight, just to buy the newest Apple phone the moment it launches. They do not just want a phone to make calls; they want to be part of an exclusive tribe, holding a symbol of a lifestyle they adore. An otaku takes that exact same fierce passion and applies it to fictional worlds, pouring their heart and soul into collecting, discussing, and celebrating every single detail of a story. When people form this kind of deep emotional bond with characters and universes, those brands achieve true lasting fame. India already has a deeply passionate audience that treats movie stars and cultural heroes with fierce devotion. By thoughtfully building immersive fan communities around modern Indian gaming and animation franchises, where everyday fans change from quiet watchers into active partners in building those fantasy worlds, our local studios can lock homegrown characters permanently into the heart of global pop culture.

Japan proved to the world long ago that a nation does not need a massive army or endless natural resources to capture the global imagination. It simply needs to give people rich worlds to explore, lovable characters to care about, and a shared emotional language to speak. Armed with a huge digital network, young energy, and an unmatched heritage of storytelling, India has everything it takes to evolve from a simple buyer and service provider of global media into its next great master builder. The journey from “Made in India” to “Invented in India” truly begins right here, by giving power to the dreamers and creators who are building our future.
