Nagpur: A dramatic incident unfolded late at night in Hiwri Nagar under Nandanvan Police Station limits, where a youth attempted to set fire to a decorative mandap installed outside Gupta Electronics. Alert locals present at the scene caught the man in time, preventing a major mishap.
Despite being stopped, the accused reportedly vandalized the area by toppling the mandap and damaging a parked two-wheeler. The entire act was captured on the shop’s CCTV camera.
According to reports, shop owner Sunil Gupta had decorated the front of his store with a festive mandap for Diwali. After closing the shop and leaving for home, a local youth named Golu Mate — said to have a criminal background arrived and tried to ignite the mandap.
Locals intervened swiftly, preventing the fire, but the accused caused further damage before fleeing. When Gupta reviewed the CCTV footage the next morning, he discovered the incident and lodged a complaint at Nandanvan Police Station.
However, despite the seriousness of the act, police have registered only a non-cognizable (NC) offence. This has angered the business community, with Gupta and other traders demanding stricter action and increased police patrolling in the area.
