High Court Issues Notice to Gondwana Club, Nagpur Police in Café Takeover Case

Nagpur: The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court has issued notices to Gondwana Club and the Nagpur Police in connection with an alleged illegal takeover of a café operating within the club premises.

The court was hearing Criminal Writ Petition No. 101 of 2026 filed by Maria, wife of Cyrus Chang, who has alleged that she was forcibly dispossessed from her café despite being in lawful and settled possession under a valid and subsisting agreement.

A Division Bench comprising Justice Anil L. Pansare and Justice Nivedita P. Mehta allowed the petitioner to implead Gondwana Club as Respondent No. 4 in the matter. Following this, the court issued notices to Respondent Nos. 1, 2, and 4, directing them to file their replies within two weeks. The Public Prosecutor waived notice on behalf of Respondent Nos. 1 and 2.

According to the petition, police personnel from Gittikhadan Police Station allegedly removed the petitioner’s staff from the café premises without any judicial order or initiation of proceedings under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. The petitioner contends that the action amounted to unlawful interference and abuse of police authority.

The High Court has permitted the petitioner to place additional documents and evidence on record to substantiate her claim that she was illegally dispossessed with police involvement.

The matter will be listed for further hearing after service of notice on the private respondent.
