Between 9 pm on July 1 and 9 am on July 2, the Regional Disaster Management Main Control Room received 18 emergency complaints, keeping fire brigade personnel engaged throughout the night.

According to the official control room report, 14 complaints were related to fallen trees, while four complaints involved waterlogging. No incidents of house fires, ember-related emergencies or any other major accidents were reported during the 12-hour period.

The city’s emergency response mechanism swung into action immediately after the complaints were received. Fire tenders and rescue teams from Sakkardara, Sugat Nagar, Ganjipeth, Civil Lines, Lakadganj, Trimurti Nagar, Cotton Market and Narendra Nagar fire stations were deployed to different parts of the city to remove fallen trees, clear roads and pump out accumulated rainwater.

The first distress call was received at 9.06 pm, reporting a tree that had collapsed near Tirubhai Biryani Hotel adjacent to Dattaji Nagar Garden. Fire personnel from the Sakkardara Fire Station rushed to the spot, cut the fallen tree and restored vehicular movement.

Within minutes, another complaint was received from Ekta Colony in Yadan Nagar, where rainwater had entered the locality. Firefighters carried out dewatering operations and cleared the accumulated water.

As the rain intensified, emergency calls poured in from different areas of the city. Trees were reported to have fallen near Chitnis Park Gate in Gandhibagh, Civil Lines Road near the Commissioner’s Office, Shirani Hanuman Temple Road in Navapura, Subhash Nagar Road near Nelco Society, Medical Square near Rajabaksha, Sudampuri in Nehru Nagar, Ajni Police Station Road opposite the HP Petrol Pump, Abhyankar Nagar Road, District Court premises, IT Park Road on Ambazari Road, Shilpa Society in Narendra Nagar, Ramna Maroti area and Borkule Layout-Santaji Dhandekar Layout.

In each case, fire brigade personnel used chainsaws and other rescue equipment to remove trees blocking roads and ensure traffic resumed safely. Most of the operations were completed within a short period after the complaints were received.

Besides tree-fall incidents, the department also attended waterlogging complaints from Gharampeth near Dr Apte Hospital, Zingabai Takli and Pawane Layout behind the Ford showroom, where water had accumulated on roads and inside residential premises. Fire personnel undertook pumping operations to drain out the stagnant water and minimise inconvenience to residents.

The official bulletin stated that 17 of the 18 reported incidents were successfully attended and resolved during the night and early morning. However, clearance work at Borkule Layout and Santaji Dhandekar Layout was still in progress when the report was issued at 9 am on Wednesday.

Officials said the coordinated efforts of the Fire and Emergency Services helped prevent major disruptions despite the widespread rain-related incidents. They appealed to citizens to remain cautious during the ongoing monsoon, avoid taking shelter or parking vehicles under trees during strong winds, and immediately inform the Regional Disaster Management Control Room or Fire Department in the event of any emergency.

The Fire and Emergency Services Department has also kept its teams on standby as the city continues to experience intermittent rainfall, with officials expecting more emergency calls if the weather conditions persist.
