Green Vigil Foundation, Nagpur observed World Water Day (WWD) 2022 , by conducting a citizen Outreach Campaign on this year’s theme of world water day – “Ground Water : Making the invisible Visible ” at Maharajbagh, Nagpur, engaging citizens on various water related issues, necessity of conservation of water resources, declining groundwater level, implementing Nature Based Solutions like rejuvenation and de- silting of lakes, rain water harvesting, treating waste waters including sewage before disposing in water bodies, creating buffer zones of vegetation along water courses etc. Citizens were also acquainted with the severe water scarcity in Nagpur to be witnessed this summer and the crucial need to protect, conserve and adapt to it by implementing Water Sustainability practices and lowering their water footprints.

World Water Day is an International Observance annually celebrated on 22nd March to advocate Sustainable Management of Freshwater resources, designated in the year 1993, as recommended at United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janerio. A core focus of World Water Day is to inspire action towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.

Surbhi Jaiswal, Team Lead, Green Vigil Foundation explained, this year’s theme of World Water Day 2022, is “Ground Water : Making the invisible Visible ” Approximately 99% of all liquid freshwater on earth, groundwater provides societies with a huge number of benefits and opportunities. But due to anthropogenic hazards major water depletion and pollution are now affecting the life and livelihood of billions of people. So, in the context of growing scarcity, the rich groundwater which contributes to the regular use of water for domestic use by the global population needs to be taken care of. The theme shines the light on groundwater which exists in aquifers and saturated zones beneath the land surface. Groundwater is one of our most valuable resources even though we probably never see it or realize it is there, hence the theme dedicated to making the invisible visible.
