Green Vigil appeals – ‘Say No to Crackers’

Green Vigil Foundation, an organization working for Environment Protection and Sustainable Development, appealed citizens to avoid use of firecrackers which are contributing towards air and noise pollution. The “Say No to Crackers” campaign was conducted at Shankar Nagar square & Variety Square.

The members of Green Vigil demonstrated banners and placards illustrating ill – effects of bursting crackers on humans and animals, their causes- the toxic chemical ingredients and suspended particulate matter, the repercussions, the long term effect on air, noise environment, and life, the huge amount of solid waste being generated, etc. to aware people about the huge disturbances, they are causing by modern way of celebration and their immediate need to shift to the traditional approach of lighting lamps.

While talking to Nagpur Today, Kaustav Chatterjee, Founder, Green Vigil Foundation, explained fire crackers emits heavy metals like cadmium and lead which are injurious to health. Fire crackers contribute significantly in increasing concentration of suspended particulate matter. The ill effects include asthma, headache, respiratory problems, eye irritation & allergies.

Surbhi Jaiswal, Co-ordinator Programs, GVF said bursting of crackers with high decibel levels and toxic compounds, is a major threat to the animals , birds and human. Huge number of stray animals and birds lose their life every year, due to inhuman behavior of citizens by abusing them with tying crackers around them, which goes unmonitored.

Green Vigil team members Daksha Borkar, Surbhi Jaiswal, Shakti Rattan, Kalyani Vaidya, Nikhil Bagesar, Bishnudeo Yadav, Sharaddha Pande, Kumaresh Tiikadar, Vikas Yadav, Abhishek Dhoke, Riya Kamolekar and others worked hard for the campaign.
