Nagpur: In a landmark achievement that promises to transform access to advanced healthcare for thousands of patients, the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Nagpur, has successfully performed Maharashtra’s first-ever liver transplant in a government hospital, marking a historic milestone in the State’s public healthcare system.
A decade after creating history with the first successful kidney transplant in a state-run hospital, GMCH has once again placed Nagpur on the medical map by accomplishing one of the most complex and challenging surgical procedures in modern medicine.
The life-saving transplant was performed on a 46-year-old farmer suffering from end-stage liver disease at the Super Speciality Hospital affiliated to GMCH. The intricate surgery was carried out by a multidisciplinary team led by GMCH Dean Dr Raj Gajbhiye in collaboration with renowned liver transplant specialist Dr Ravi Mohanka and his team from Mumbai.
The achievement is being hailed as a game-changer for economically weaker patients who often find advanced organ transplantation beyond their financial reach due to the enormous costs involved in private healthcare institutions.
The breakthrough became possible through a unique partnership between GMCH and Mumbai-based Reliance Hospital, under which expert liver transplant specialists visit Nagpur twice every month and provide their services free of cost.
The transplant itself was made possible by an act of extraordinary generosity. After a brain-dead donor’s family consented to organ donation, medical teams conducted compatibility assessments and identified the 46-year-old farmer as a suitable recipient.
Once the donor liver was allocated, a race against time began.
The transplant team from Mumbai reached Nagpur on Thursday evening, and the marathon surgery commenced at 9 pm. After nearly seven hours of painstaking surgical work, the operation was successfully completed, giving the patient a renewed chance at life.
Hope for thousands of patients
Medical experts described the procedure as one of the most demanding surgeries in the field of organ transplantation, requiring exceptional coordination between surgeons, anaesthetists, gastroenterologists, transplant coordinators and intensive care specialists.
What makes the achievement even more significant is that the entire cost of the transplant was borne by the hospital administration, sparing the patient’s family an expenditure that would otherwise have run into several lakhs of rupees in a private hospital.
“This is a major achievement for Maharashtra’s public healthcare system. Advanced organ transplant services will now become accessible to patients who cannot afford expensive treatment in private institutions,” Dr Gajbhiye said.
GMCH had earlier etched its name in medical history in February 2016 by performing the first kidney transplant in a government hospital in Maharashtra. The successful liver transplant now represents another giant leap for the institution, reinforcing its status as one of the state’s leading centres for organ transplantation and advanced medical care.
Healthcare experts believe the development could pave the way for many more liver transplants in the public sector, reducing dependence on costly private hospitals and ensuring that life-saving treatment is available to patients regardless of their economic background.
The operation was carried out by a large team of specialists, including surgeons, anaesthetists, gastroenterologists, transplant coordinators and paramedical staff from both Nagpur and Mumbai.
Administrative and logistical support for the historic procedure was provided by Super Speciality Hospital Administrator Dr Shailesh Gahukar, OSD Dr Sushma Thakre, Medical Superintendent Dr Avinash Gavande and senior officials associated with the transplant programme.
For Maharashtra’s public healthcare system, the successful liver transplant is more than just a medical achievement, it is a powerful message that world-class treatment is no longer confined to private hospitals. For countless patients waiting for a second chance at life, it represents a new era of hope.
