In yet another incident of assaults on doctors, an on-duty resident Dr Amit Bahepi was allegedly manhandled by a patient’s relatives following an argument. Bahepi works with the medicine department in the hospital. A doctor working in the hospital said, “The incident happened at 4 pm when a patient was rushed to the hospital and required diagnosis. The relatives were agitated and they pulled the on duty doctor by his collar.”
Following the incident,over 320 resident doctors working in the Government Medical College, Nagpur, have gone on an indefinite strike from Tuesday to voice their anger against yet another case of assault on a fellow resident doctor.
The central MARD strongly condemned this incident and the past string of repeated assaults on doctors, with several doctors now urging the hospital administration to provide proper security.
A meeting was conducted with the hospital’s dean regarding the incident.
Wakchaure said that MARD has now put forth a set of demands in front of the state government. Amongst them, the association stressed on doctor protection act implementation and formation of special armed guards in sensitive areas that have frequently reported cases of assault on medical practitioners.
“We also demand to have a security reformation in hospitals,” Wakchaure said.
He added,” If demands of resident doctors will not be fulfilled within three days, MARD will take a harsh decision that may be in the form of an indefinite strike all over Maharashtra.”
