Nagpur: BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut’s controversial remarks describing Gen Z as “Generation Gutter” have triggered a nationwide debate, with social media divided over whether her criticism targeted the conduct of a few protesters or unfairly stereotyped an entire generation. The controversy intensified after Ranaut defended her comments, saying she was objecting to the normalization of abusive and obscene behaviour displayed by some protesters during recent demonstrations.
To understand how young people themselves view the controversy, the Nagpur Today team spoke to members of Gen Z, who offered contrasting opinions on Ranaut’s statement and the larger issue of youth protests.
One participant strongly criticised the BJP MP’s remarks, calling them “hypocritical.”
“The woman who built her entire career by breaking social boundaries is today asking other women to stay within them. Coming from a sitting MP, this shifts the conversation away from the real issue. Instead of discussing why students were protesting, the focus has become how they protested.”
The participant also argued that the government had already acknowledged the seriousness of the issue by introducing measures such as the anti-paper leak law, making it important to address accountability rather than branding an entire generation.
However, another youngster offered a different perspective. While agreeing that the language used by some protesters was inappropriate, the participant questioned the circumstances that led to such anger.
“Kangana ji may have called this generation ‘gutter,’ but who created these conditions? Young people felt they had to take to the streets because they believed their voices weren’t being heard. When institutions fail to listen, frustration often takes extreme forms.”
The discussion highlighted that opinions among Gen Z are far from uniform. While some believe public protests must remain within the limits of decency, others argue that criticism should focus on the reasons behind public outrage rather than only on the manner in which it is expressed.
The exclusive Nagpur Today video captures these candid reactions and reflects the wider national conversation surrounding freedom of expression, public protests, political accountability, and the expectations placed on India’s youngest generation.
