Nagpur: A violent clash near Futala Lake on Monday evening claimed the life of Sheikh Asad alias Aman Sheikh Shahnawaz Khan, nephew of jailed gangster Shekhu alias Gulnawaz, while his friend Mayur Jadhav sustained critical injuries. The incident triggered panic in the popular lakeside area and prompted a massive police operation.

According to preliminary investigations, the dispute allegedly began over the placement of a corn (bhutta) stall near Futala Chowpatty. Mayur, who runs a pan stall in the area, reportedly got into an argument with Yogendra alias Lala Shivakant Pandey. When the exchange turned abusive, Aman and Mayur allegedly assaulted Lala.

Police said Lala then informed his brother Jitendra alias Junglee Shivakant Pandey. Within minutes, Junglee arrived at the spot with several associates, allegedly armed with sharp weapons. As Aman and Mayur attempted to flee, the attackers chased them.

Investigators said Aman was allegedly stabbed multiple times, suffering fatal injuries to his chest and abdomen, and collapsed at the scene. Mayur was also repeatedly attacked with sharp weapons and remains in critical condition at a private hospital.

Doctors declared Aman dead on arrival.

Four Minors Detained, Main Accused on the Run

Police have detained four juveniles in connection with the murder. However, the alleged main accused, Yogendra alias Lala Pandey and Jitendra alias Junglee Pandey, are reportedly absconding. Other suspects identified in the case include Ballu, Vedant, Vishal, Sunil, and Deepak. Multiple police teams have been formed to trace and arrest the remaining accused.

New Police Commissioner Reaches Crime Scene

Soon after the incident, newly appointed Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangare Patil, who had assumed charge earlier the same day, visited the crime scene and reviewed the investigation. He directed officers to arrest all the accused within 24 hours and ensure strict action against those involved.

A Grim Coincidence

The murder has also sparked discussion within police circles because it occurred on the very day the new Commissioner took charge. It marks the third consecutive instance in Nagpur where a murder has taken place on the first day of a newly appointed Police Commissioner’s tenure.

Police have registered a murder case at Gittikhadan Police Station and are examining CCTV footage, questioning witnesses, and conducting raids to apprehend the absconding suspects. Further investigation is underway.
