Nagpur: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLC Prakash Gajbhiye met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and demanded government jobs and seats in educational institutions to meritorious SC, ST, OBC, VJNT students in general category also. Gajbhiye cited the recent Supreme Court ruling in the regard to press for his demand.

According to Gajbhiye, the Central Government did not put up its side appropriately on the issue of government jobs and seats in educational institutions for SC, ST, OBC and VJNT candidates on the basis of merit. The Supreme Court ruled that candidates from the “reserved” category (SC/ST/OBC) can’t claim jobs and seats in the general category in any case. Such claims state that 50% of all seats are completely “reserved” for the general category, and no SC/ST/OBC person can have a claim on such seats, even on the basis of merit. Fadnavis assured Gajbhiye to look into his demand after going through the apex court order.

Gajbhiye further said that the Supreme Court ruling will deprive the SC, ST, OBC and VJNT candidates of government employment as well as higher education. Hence the Government Maharashtra should issue a notification providing jobs and seats to the SC, ST, OBC and VJNT candidates in general category also.

“Reservation was the only way of empowering the backward SC, ST, OBC and VJNT people. These people were being provided opportunities in general category also on the basis of merit. However, the BJP Government has made lives of common people miserable by thrusting new rules. The party had promised to reduce unemployment and inflation but in fact both these problems have increased in monstrous proportions. Now, the candidates belonging to SC, ST, OBC and VJNT categories have been robbed of higher education prospects, too,” Gajbhiye charged.
