Nagpur: On 24 July 1917, Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj had enacted a law to make primary education free and compulsory for all. This was implemented with the aim of creating an educated society whose progress is based on education.

But due to fund constraints, the condition of schools in our district’s rural areas is indeed pathetic. Buildings of 88 schools are dilapidated and in a dangerous condition. Some schools are operating from dangerous buildings and some from open spaces.

As per a survey conducted by the education department, classrooms in 88 schools in the district are in a dangerous condition. Also, during rainy days, water seeps into buildings through roofs, walls, and such roofs leak often. This creates difficulties for students while learning. The possibility of a major accident taking place always looms large.

There is an urgent need to demolish dilapidated classrooms and construct new ones instead. Unfortunately, funding for these proposals has been withheld. Proposals were put forth a year or two ago.

Rs 11.73 crore sanctioned
Classrooms of 88 ZP schools are dilapidated. Rs 11.73 crore has been approved for construction. But the government has withheld funds which has stalled the construction process. In some villages, schools are conducting classes in dangerous buildings. The risk of a major accident taking place looms large. Who shall be responsible in case an accident occurs, this question has arisen.
School operating from under a tree in Gondikhapa village

As the primary school building of Gondikhapa village in Malegaon GP in Katol taluka is greatly dilapidated, only one room out of four is worth using. The proposal of construction for the remaining ones has been approved. An expenditure of Rs.13 lakh has been sanctioned for this purpose. But withheld funds have resulted in students studying by sitting under a tree in the school premises from the last two years. Since the primary school building in Gondikhapa village is in an extremely dilapidated state, three of the four classrooms in this school building were demolished in 2019. Authorities approved only one classroom’s construction. But even funds corresponding to this one classroom’s construction have been withheld.

Taluka wise data of vulnerable schools, classrooms and funds sanctioned is as follows:
