Nagpur: In a moment rich with symbolism and quiet social significance, RSS Swayamsevak Ganesh Charlewar has been elected as a Corporator to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation, the very institution where his father has spent decades working as a peon and is due to retire later this year.

The result from Prabhag 31A, covering the politically sensitive and historic Mahal and Reshimbagh areas, was closely watched and fiercely contested. At the end of a tense count, the 34-year-old Charlewar emerged victorious with 12,667 votes, defeating Congress candidate Vandana Meshram, who secured 11,747 votes. The narrow margin of about 920 votes reflected the high-stakes nature of the battle in one of Nagpur’s most prominent wards.

Charlewar’s journey is deeply rooted in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. A swayamsevak since the age of six, he has spent nearly three decades in the organisation, imbibing its discipline and ideology. Parallelly, he worked quietly at the grassroots for the Bharatiya Janata Party at the booth level for over 22 years, making this victory the culmination of long, patient organisational work rather than a sudden political rise.

Despite his RSS and BJP background, Charlewar contested the election on a Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) ticket, after Prabhag 31A was allotted to the Sena under the BJP–Shiv Sena alliance’s seat-sharing arrangement. Fielded as a youth candidate, his nomination itself was seen as a calculated bet on organisational loyalty and ground connect.

Speaking after his victory, Charlewar acknowledged both his roots and the opportunity placed before him. “I come from a very modest family. My father has worked as a peon in the NMC, and this chance means everything to me. I am grateful to the BJP–Shiv Sena alliance for trusting a grassroots worker like me,” he said, adding that he would work towards a better Nagpur aligned with Vision 2047.

For Charlewar, the win is not merely political, it is deeply personal. From growing up in an RSS shakha to walking into the civic body as an elected representative, while his father prepares to retire from the same institution as a Class-IV employee, the moment captures a rare crossing of generations and social roles.

Charlewar said his immediate focus would be on addressing civic grievances and resolving citizens’ complaints, stressing that accessibility and responsiveness would define his tenure.

His election has resonated beyond party lines, with many viewing it as a powerful example of a grassroots worker rising through organisational discipline, patience and perseverance, a reminder that in local democracy, quiet dedication can still translate into electoral trust.
