Nagpur: In a shocking incident that has raised serious questions over discipline and patient safety inside one of the Nagpur’s biggest government hospitals, a heated argument between junior resident doctors at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) spiralled into an ugly fistfight on Monday, leaving stunned patients and anxious relatives watching scenes more suited to a street brawl than a medical institution.
What allegedly began as a dispute over delayed medical reports inside the Radiology Department soon exploded into open violence between resident doctors from the Surgery and Radiology departments, disrupting hospital services and creating panic in a section directly linked to critical patient care.
Eyewitnesses said the atmosphere inside the hospital turned chaotic within minutes as shouting, pushing and physical assault broke out openly in front of patients waiting for X-rays and diagnostic tests. For some time, the Radiology Department virtually resembled a “wrestling arena,” with doctors from both groups allegedly attacking each other amid loud arguments and commotion.
According to sources, the confrontation initially started between Radiology Department junior resident doctor Kshitij Yadav and Surgery Department resident doctor Vaibhav Chaudhary over delays in issuing patient reports.
The verbal altercation reportedly intensified after objections were raised regarding pending reports and diagnostic delays affecting treatment procedures. What should have remained a professional disagreement allegedly escalated rapidly into aggressive confrontation and physical pushing.
Instead of calming the situation, tensions worsened when several resident doctors from the Surgery Department allegedly entered the Radiology section shortly after the initial argument. Though it was initially claimed they had arrived to “resolve the matter,” the confrontation reignited, ultimately leading to a full-scale scuffle between both sides.
Witnesses described scenes of punches being thrown, doctors shoving each other and loud verbal abuse echoing through the department, while frightened patients and attendants looked on in disbelief.
The fallout directly affected hospital services, with radiology operations partially disrupted for some time. Several patients reportedly remained stranded waiting for scans and reports as hospital staff struggled to restore order.
The incident has triggered outrage among relatives of patients, many of whom questioned the safety and professionalism within the hospital.
“If doctors themselves start fighting inside departments responsible for saving lives, then whom should ordinary people trust?” remarked one attendant present during the chaos.
The administration of Government Medical College and Hospital Nagpur has reportedly taken serious note of the episode and constituted an internal inquiry committee to investigate the matter. Statements of the resident doctors involved, along with departmental heads, are now being recorded.
Significantly, despite the dramatic scenes inside the hospital premises, no official police complaint had been lodged at Ajni Police Station till late evening. When contacted, Police Inspector Nitinchandra Rajkumar confirmed that no formal complaint regarding the incident had been received.
The absence of a police complaint has itself sparked criticism, especially as cases involving altercations with patients’ relatives are often immediately escalated to law enforcement. The silence over an open clash between two groups of doctors inside a government hospital has now raised uncomfortable questions over whether the administration is attempting to handle the controversy internally to avoid public embarrassment.
