Former Principal of Dr. Ambedkar College, VC of YCMOU Dr Krishnakumar dies at 52

For his contributions in the field of higher education, Dr Krishnakumar was bestowed with Best Teachers Award (RTM Nagpur University),Vocational Excellence Award by Rotary International, Maharshi Valmiki National Award, Bihar Shikshan Award, and  Bihar Gaurav Award.

Renowned academician and former Principal of Dr Ambedkar College Dr R Krishnakumar,  who devoted his entire life to the betterment of education and created hundreds of outstanding students who brought laurels to the College, the city and country as whole, passed away in the wee hours of Tuesday.  He was 52.

Dr R. Krishnakumar was also a former Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Governor and Vice Chancellor of Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) Nashik from 2008 till his death.

Dr R Krishnakumar has left behind wife Rajyasvi, two daughters, Nandita and Nikita, and host of relatives, fiends in every field to mourn the loss. Dr Krishnakumar’s body was brought  to Dr Babasaheb  Ambedkar College, where he spent several years his life in various positions. Eminent personalities in the education field and others, staff and students of the College paid their last respects.

Dr R Krishnakumar began his teaching career as a lecturer in the Department of Physics in Dr Ambedkar College, Deekshabhoomi, Nagpur in 1984, having done his graduation and post graduation from Institute of Science, Nagpur in 1982 and 1984 respectively. He was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1987 by the Nagpur University. He became the Vice-Principal of the College in 1993 and was appointed Principal in 2000.

The contribution of Dr. R. Krishnakumar in the academic arena of  Maharashtra in general and Nagpur University in particular is well known. He was instrumental in raising the standard of teaching and learning at Dr. Ambedkar College, Nagpur and succeeded in making it as one of the best institutions in Central India. It is the only institution in Maharashtra offering courses in four faculties to have been accredited by NAAC at A+ level. Recently, the College has been given the status of “College with potential for excellence” by University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi. Dr. Ambedkar College, under his leadership, achieved a number of milestones in the Academics, Research, Staff and Student Development, Sports and Cultural Activities. Today, it is one of the most sought after institutions in Central India. Dr. R Krishnakumar has been a member of the Management Council, Academic Council and Senate of Nagpur University. He was the former Director of the Board of College and University Development, RTM Nagpur University. He was also former Secretary of the Principals Forum, Nagpur University. He is the UGC nominee on the Governing Body of one university and an Engineering College in Andhra Pradesh. He has been the member coordinator of a number of NAAC peer teams.

Dr Krishnakumar strived hard for promotion of student centric activities in the field of higher education. He strongly believed in teamwork. He was rightly chosen to be part of the Higher Education System at the Chancellor’s Secretariat in Bihar. During his two years’ stay in Raj Bhavan, Bihar, he supported the activities of 12 State Universities and contributed to the overall development of the Higher Education System in Bihar. He also introduced a number of innovative programmes for the benefit of staff and students in Bihar.

Dr. R. Krishnakumar was associated with a number of social, cultural and scientific organizations in the country. He was the Past President of Nagpur Jaycees, Executive Member of the Grand Lodge of India and the Regional Grand Lodge of Western India. He also served as Associate NCC Officer in Air Wing NCC, Nagpur.
