Five bookies accepting betting for World Cup Football matches arrested in Jaripatka area

Crime Branch of Nagpur Police on Thursday arrested five bookies who were cashing in on betting over World Cup Football matches. As the FIFA World Cup reached its feverish pitch, betting too reached its peak.

The Crime Branch received a tip-off that rampant betting on FIFA matches is going on through internet. Armed with the information, the Crime Branch sleuths, on June 26, raided Wing A, Flat No. 504, Pyramid City in Jaripatka area. The police found that bets were being accepted for Germany Vs USA match by accused Suresh Hirachand Chelwani (38), a resident of Jaripatka, LIG 97, Nagpur, Sachin Keshav Taywade (25), a resident of Benzonbaugh, Nagpur, Bhagwant Dhanrajani Khatanmal (46), a resident of near Dayanand Park, Nagpur, Shankar Bikchand Kukreja (38), a resident of Misal Layout, Nagpur and Nitesh Angatram Ahuja (29), a resident of Kamalful Chowk, Nagpur. All the accused were found accepting betting on phone. The World Cup Football is being played in Brazil.

The Crime Branch registered an offence with Jaripatka Police Station against the accused under Sections 4, 5 of Mumbai Prevention of Gambling Act. All the accused have been arrested and mobiles, 2 laptops, 2 LCDs, other machines and cash of Rs 5070 collectively valued at Rs 3,97,899 have been seized from them.

The action was carried out under guidance Police Commissioner K K Pathak, Additional Police Commissioner Sanjay Saxena, Additional Commissioner Sunil Kolhe, Assistant Commissioner Nilesh Raut by Police Inspector Dinkar Sawarkar, API Mangesh Desai, API Narendra Pawar, API Dahatonde, PSI Abdul Wahab, constables Laxman Shende, Afsar Khan, Pradeep Ingole, Rajendra Dhopte, Shekhar Kabhe, Prashant Deshmukh, Mahesh Bawane, Mahesh Jadhav, Narendra Choudhari and Dilip.
