FDA Seizes Patanjali Medicines Worth Rs 7.26 Lakh in Nagpur

Nagpur: In a strong warning against misleading medical advertisements and unverified therapeutic claims, the Nagpur unit of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized medicines worth Rs 7.26 lakh manufactured by Divya Pharmacy, a unit of the Patanjali Group. The action is being viewed as the first major enforcement drive since FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe assumed office and has sent shockwaves through the pharmaceutical and healthcare distribution sector.

The crackdown was carried out on Friday at M/s Aryodaya Sales Pvt. Ltd., located in Yerla near Kalmeshwar in Nagpur district. An FDA team conducted an extensive inspection of medicine stocks and related documents between 3 pm and 4 pm, scrutinizing products allegedly carrying exaggerated and potentially misleading health claims.

Claims of treating serious ailments under scanner

According to FDA officials, several products manufactured by Divya Pharmacy were found to contain promotional claims relating to the treatment, management, or improvement of various medical conditions. The products under scrutiny included Neurogrit Gold, Memorygrit, Madhugrit, Melanogrit, Cystogrit, and Narikanti.

Investigators reportedly found that the packaging and promotional materials associated with these medicines claimed benefits such as enhancing brain function, improving memory, treating skin disorders, and addressing various other health conditions.

Regulatory authorities have raised concerns that such claims could potentially mislead consumers into believing that the products offer assured or scientifically proven remedies for complex medical problems.

Officials emphasized that under Indian law, medicines cannot be advertised with claims of guaranteed cures, miraculous results, or treatment benefits unless such claims are supported by recognized scientific evidence and comply with regulatory requirements.

Sources within the FDA said the action was initiated after authorities found alleged violations relating to objectionable advertisements and health-related claims.

The seizure has reportedly been carried out under provisions of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, a law designed to prevent misleading advertisements and false promises regarding the treatment of diseases and medical conditions.

The Act prohibits advertisements that directly or indirectly claim magical cures or guaranteed treatment outcomes for certain diseases and conditions, particularly where such claims lack scientific validation.

The seizure is being seen as a clear indication that the FDA intends to adopt a tougher stance against companies promoting products through unverified health claims. Officials have indicated that scrutiny of pharmaceutical advertisements, product labels, and promotional campaigns is likely to intensify in the coming months.

The development has triggered concern among medicine distributors, retailers, and manufacturers, many of whom are now reviewing product literature and marketing materials to ensure compliance with regulatory norms.

Message to the industry

Industry observers believe the action carries a broader message for the healthcare and wellness sector. Regulatory authorities appear determined to curb practices that could influence vulnerable consumers through exaggerated promises of treatment or recovery.

While the seized products will now undergo further regulatory examination, the FDA has indicated that legal proceedings and detailed investigations are continuing.

The enforcement action marks one of the most significant recent interventions by the regulator in Maharashtra and signals a renewed focus on consumer protection, transparency, and accountability in the pharmaceutical and wellness products market.
