FDA seizes 219 kg of spices worth Rs 77 lakh in Nagpur’s Diwali food safety crackdown

Nagpur: In a major crackdown ahead of Diwali, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Nagpur Division, has seized 219.4 kg of spices valued at Rs 77.12 lakh during a special food safety drive across Nagpur city and rural areas. The inspections, conducted in Kalamna, Itwari, Wadi and Nagpur Rural, uncovered multiple alleged violations of prescribed food hygiene and storage standards, raising concerns over the handling and quality of products entering the festive market.

The seized spices were suspected to be substandard or adulterated and to have been manufactured under unhygienic conditions. However, the FDA has clarified that the exact nature of the suspected violations will be established only after laboratory analysis.

The action comes at a time when demand for spices, sweets, snacks and other food products surges ahead of Diwali, prompting intensified scrutiny of manufacturers, traders and food establishments.

Poor hygiene, improper storage raise concerns

According to R R Shah, Assistant Commissioner, FDA, Nagpur, inspections revealed violations of Schedule Four hygiene requirements, which prescribe standards for maintaining cleanliness and ensuring safe food handling.

Among the irregularities observed were food products stored directly on the ground, improper packaging, incorrect labelling and a general lack of cleanliness at the inspected premises.

Such lapses raise concerns about the conditions under which food products are manufactured, stored and handled before reaching consumers. The FDA seized the spices on suspicion of quality violations and possible adulteration, pending confirmation through laboratory testing.

Shah cautioned against drawing conclusions before the test results are available. He said laboratory reports would determine whether the samples contained unidentified substances or failed to meet the prescribed quality standards.

The distinction is significant, as the seizure reflects suspected violations and does not, by itself, establish that the products were adulterated.

Laboratory reports to determine further action

The FDA is expected to take further action within 14 days, officials indicated. The findings of the laboratory analysis will be crucial in determining the nature of the violations and the subsequent course of action against those responsible, wherever violations are established.

The action also serves as a warning to food businesses that hygiene, packaging, labelling and storage requirements cannot be overlooked during periods of heightened demand.

Sweets, edible oils and festive snacks under scanner

The enforcement drive extends beyond spices. According to Krishna Jaipurkar, Joint Commissioner, FDA, Nagpur, officials are also inspecting edible oils, sweets, dry fruits, chocolates and namkeens as part of the wider Diwali food safety campaign.

Traditional Maharashtrian snacks, including chakli and other breakfast items, are also under scrutiny as their consumption and market demand increase during the festive season.

The expanded inspections are intended to monitor the quality and safety of a wide range of food products commonly purchased by households during Diwali.

Consumers urged to remain vigilant

The seizure highlights the importance of effective food safety checks during the festive season, when increased consumption places additional pressure on manufacturers and suppliers.

Consumers should check packaging integrity, labelling, manufacturing and expiry details, and avoid purchasing food products from visibly unhygienic premises. Suspiciously packaged or improperly labelled products warrant particular caution.

With laboratory results awaited, the FDA’s next steps will determine whether the seized spices failed prescribed safety or quality standards and what action may follow. The ongoing drive will also test the effectiveness of inspections in ensuring that food sold across Nagpur during Diwali meets mandatory hygiene and safety requirements.
