Ajni Railway Station redevelopment gains momentum

Nagpur: The redevelopment of Ajni Railway Station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is gathering pace, with major civil construction activities progressing on both the eastern and western sides. The project is set to transform Ajni into a modern satellite terminal for Nagpur, featuring upgraded passenger facilities, improved accessibility and seamless connectivity with the Metro network.

On the eastern side, the G+3 station building is nearing completion. The ticket counter on the ground floor has been completed, while finishing and facade work is currently underway. Once commissioned, the new terminal will provide passengers with direct access from the eastern side, reducing the inconvenience of reaching the station and making entry and exit more convenient.

The centrepiece of the redevelopment is a massive 72-metre-wide elevated air-conditioned concourse, designed to serve as the principal passenger circulation, waiting and holding area across all platforms.

Construction of the elevated concourse has reached an advanced stage, with heavy steel girders placed above the railway tracks as of August 27, 2026. Officials said the first level of the foundation work had been completed, while slab construction and roof launching activities were in progress.

Once completed, the expansive concourse will span all platforms, enabling passengers to move more conveniently across the station while providing a spacious, weather-protected environment for waiting and other passenger activities.

Pawan Kumar Patil, Chief Project Officer of the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), said the elevated concourse was the heart of the Ajni redevelopment project.

“Founding Level 1 is complete and slab and roof launching is in progress. Once commissioned, it will integrate East and West sides and provide world-class amenities to passengers. Ajni will emerge as a major satellite terminal for Nagpur,” Patil said.

The integrated design is expected to improve passenger movement and make the station better equipped to handle growing railway traffic in the region.

Additional platforms under development

At present, three platforms are operational, while work on four additional platforms—two on each side of the existing arrangement, as indicated in the project details—is in progress.

Train operations are currently being managed from the western side, using Platforms 1 and 2 to ensure that passenger services continue without interruption while redevelopment work proceeds.

However, a portion of the girder-launching work on the western side remains pending because the underground road, or road underbridge (RUB), in front of Ajni station is under construction. Officials said the remaining launching work would be taken up after completion of the road project.

The coordination between railway construction and road infrastructure is a crucial part of the redevelopment, as the completed facilities are intended to improve access to the station from both sides.

West-side building to integrate with Metro

On the western side, construction of a G+1 station building is also underway. The building is being developed as an integrated facility with Congress Nagar Metro Station, creating a direct interface between Indian Railways and Nagpur Metro.

The planned integration is expected to make transfers between rail and Metro services more convenient for commuters, while improving access to Ajni for passengers travelling from different parts of the city.

With separate access from the eastern and western sides, an expansive elevated concourse, additional platforms and integrated Metro connectivity, the redeveloped station is expected to offer a substantially improved passenger experience.

Ajni poised to strengthen Nagpur’s rail infrastructure

The redevelopment is aimed at giving Ajni a larger role in handling the city’s railway traffic as a satellite terminal, complementing Nagpur’s main railway station.

The combination of modern station buildings, expanded platform capacity, an air-conditioned concourse and multimodal connectivity is expected to improve passenger circulation and reduce congestion at key access points.

As construction advances, the focus remains on completing the major structural components while maintaining uninterrupted train operations. Once the facilities are commissioned, Ajni Railway Station is expected to emerge as a modern transport hub, offering improved accessibility and more convenient connections between rail, road and Metro services.
