Nagpur: In a tragic turn of events, a 19-year-old girl ended her life by jumping from a flyover in Butibori in the early hours of Sunday. The incident occurred past midnight, and she was found with grievous head injuries under the flyover.

The deceased, Nilima Shahu, who was gearing up for her National Eligibility-Cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) for the second time, had left her home in Mhada Colony, Butibori, reportedly around 1 a.m. and walked nearly a kilometre to the flyover.

According to a media report, Nilima had dinner with her family and retired to her room before leaving the house around 1 a.m. She was captured on CCTV footage near a petrol pump walking towards the flyover. Her sandals were found on the bridge, suggesting she took the fatal leap from there.

Nilima’s absence was noticed by her family around 5 a.m., well before her scheduled departure for the exam centre. Concerned, the family began contacting friends and acquaintances, prompting someone to alert the Butibori police about Nilima’s disappearance.

Upon summoning the family to the spot where Nilima’s body lay, the police sought their identification, as Nilima’s identity was initially unknown due to the absence of clues.

No suicide note was found, and Nilima had left her cell phone at home.

While Nilima’s family didn’t explicitly attribute examination stress as the reason for her actions, the police are considering it a potential factor. Despite Nilima’s academic success and studious nature, her unsuccessful attempt at the NEET-UG last year might have contributed to performance pressure.

However, the police have not found concrete evidence to support the theory of examination stress as the sole motivator for Nilima’s tragic decision.

The untimely demise of Nilima Shahu has left her family and the community in shock. While the investigation continues, the incident underscores the importance of mental health support, particularly among students facing academic pressures. The Butibori police are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward to aid in the investigation.
