Education taking severe beating as dozens of NMC teachers working in other departments

The teachers are drawing their salaries as teachers but are working in other NMC departments rather than teaching. These teachers could appropriately be called “White Elephants” as they are neither helping increase the NMC revenue nor doing any quality work nor teaching the students of their respective schools. These teachers are playing active role in NMC’s politics and neglecting their very profession.

Nagpur News

Are they teachers or traitors? Are they true to their profession? These and similar other questions are crowding the minds of parents of those students who are studying in Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) schools. The present education scenario in NMC schools could aptly be worded as dismal, to say the least. And the men behind this sordid scenario are the teachers, nay, traitors. Because these teachers are never found in the schools but are enjoying their time in other departments of NMC, for years together. Of course, with the blessings of NMC Administration, office-bearers including the Mayor and other vested interests. These teachers care a hoot the attempts of Municipal Commissioner who umpteen times issued orders to send these teachers back to their schools, where they belong, and stick to their profession – teaching. All the concerned in NMC echelon are making a mockery of State Government’s 100 percent aid and subsequently, mocking at the education itself!!

Teachers are defined in thousands of goody, goody words such as “Everyone who remembers his own education remembers teachers, not methods and techniques. The teacher is the heart of the educational system.” “One good teacher in a lifetime may sometimes change a student into a great citizen.” But the NMC teachers are doling out handicap children by making their lives easy, easy of no learning, easy of no inspiration, easy of no quality education and many more easies.

Ironically, the Municipal Commissioner Shyam Wardhane, who had launched “Mission Parivartan” for raising the standards of the NMC schools, was shocked to find the students could not carry out multiplications and divisions when he had visited Class I, II, III and Class V to check the quality of education in one of the NMC schools a few days back. Wardhane had initiated several schemes as part of “Mission Parivartan” that aimed at changing the scenario in NMC schools for the better. However, many of the schemes were shown successful, only on paper, and the Administration patted its own back by bragging the success. But the ground reality is totally different. Both NMC Administration and teachers are playing dirty games with “Vidyadaan,” the sacred profession of teaching.

As a result, forget quality, basic education is taking a severe beating in NMC schools. The Municipal Commissioner, for the sake of duty, issues orders for sending these “White Elephant” teachers to their respective schools. But the Education Department, reeling under politics of Ruling Party, neglects the orders with disdain. Till today, many teachers are enjoying their time in other departments of NMC, for years together. Other factors are also providing a helping hand to these teachers. Wives of many teachers are Corporators and nobody dares to invite the wrath of these Corporators by shifting their husbands to their schools. No surprise, the education scenario in NMC schools continues to show the declining trend.

Talking about facts and figures, more than 6 dozen teachers are working in other departments for years together. To name a few, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) Ashok Kolhatkar is one of them. Kolhatkar was originally appointed as teacher but with blessings of politicians, he continues to be whiling his time in not-so-important department. Kolhatkar is enjoying all privileges of Public Relations Department except teachership.

It is not surprising the parents think twice before admitting their wards to NMC schools. Admitting in NMC schools could turn out be admitting to uncertain future.
