One of her most memorable appearances came in April 1989 during the “Chitrapat Geet–Bhajan–Ghazal” programme, where she shared the stage with renowned artists such as Hariharan, Varsha Bhosle and Sudesh Bhosle. The event celebrated a rich mix of film songs, devotional music and ghazals, showcasing the depth and versatility of Indian musical traditions.

She returned to Nagpur again in April 1997 for the prestigious “Deenanath Mangeshkar Smruti Puraskar Samaroh” held at Yeshwant Stadium. The programme carried special emotional significance as it brought together members of the illustrious Mangeshkar family. Alongside Asha Bhosle were her siblings, the legendary Lata Mangeshkar, composer Hridaynath Mangeshkar and singer Usha Mangeshkar, making the evening a historic musical gathering for Nagpur audiences.

Her association with the city continued in later years as she returned to perform at the same venue in 2008 and again in 2015, reaffirming her enduring bond with the region’s music lovers.

Beyond live concerts, one of the most meaningful aspects of Bhosle’s connection with Vidarbha lies in her association with the poetry of Suresh Bhat, the legendary Marathi ghazal poet born in Amravati. Known for the emotional depth and lyrical beauty of his compositions, Bhat’s poetry reached wider audiences when it was set to music and performed by voices like those of Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar.

In April 2016, Bhosle undertook a unique musical project titled “82”, a Western pop-styled Marathi album featuring Bhat’s ghazals. The album, named after her age at the time of recording, was completed within a week and featured compositions originally entrusted to the project’s music director by the poet himself. The album’s televised launch, hosted by veteran anchor Sudhir Gadgil, also invited fans to create music videos inspired by the songs, adding a contemporary dimension to classical poetry.

Nagpur’s cultural landscape still reflects the lasting impact of Bhat’s poetry and the voices that brought it to life. The Suresh Bhat Auditorium, named after the celebrated poet, stands as a prominent centre for literary and musical events, symbolising the region’s rich artistic heritage and the memorable moments when local literature met national musical icons like Bhosle.

For many in Nagpur, memories of Asha Bhosle are inseparable from evenings when stadiums were filled with music lovers, when ghazals based on Vidarbha’s poetry resonated across the city, and when her voice effortlessly moved between classical melodies, film songs and soulful ghazals.

A quiet visit to RSS Headquarters

Away from the spotlight of concerts, one of Asha Bhosle’s final visits to Nagpur took place quietly in October 2024. The visit followed an event in Mumbai in June 2024 where Mohan Bhagwat unveiled a book dedicated to the singer. During that event, he invited Bhosle to Nagpur, leading to her visit to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh headquarters in Mahal.

Arriving in the city a day after the annual Vijayadashami celebrations, Bhosle spent nearly three hours at the RSS headquarters in a low-key and informal interaction.

Sources familiar with the visit said the interaction between Bhagwat and the singer was relaxed and unhurried. At one point, Bhosle spontaneously sang a few of her songs, creating a memorable moment for those present.

During her stay, she also visited the organisation’s Sangrahalaya (museum), where archival material and exhibits documenting the early history of the RSS are displayed. She showed keen interest in the sections narrating the formation of the organisation and the history of its first shakha.

The interaction between the two continued beyond that meeting. In January 2025, Mohan Bhagwat later visited Bhosle at her residence in Mumbai, where the singer personally hosted him for a meal she had prepared. The meeting lasted for several hours and reflected the cordial bond formed during her Nagpur visit.

As tributes pour in from across India and around the world, Nagpur remembers Asha Bhosle not just as a legendary voice but as an artist who repeatedly returned to the city, leaving behind memories of music, poetry and cultural warmth that will continue to resonate for generations.
