Nagpur: Saurabh Babarao Ghavghave, a 57-year-old resident of Wathoda in Nagpur has fallen victim to the ‘e-Task’ scam, losing a staggering sum of Rs 35.60 lakh. Cyber police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
According to police, Ghavghave, residing at Plot No. 7, near Swami Narayan Mandir, Wathoda, lodged a complaint that the incident took place from July 11 to 16, when an unknown person contacted him through Telegram app. He posed as Manager of a company and contacted him from user id ana6688@ecce9892. The police said, under the guise of a simple task involving liking a YouTube video, the fraudster enticed Ghavghave with promises of lucrative financial gains. He agreed to undertake the task and even received some monetary rewards for completing the initial task.
This helped build trust between him and the cyber fraudster. Soon after, the fraudster proceeded to lure Ghavghave into investing in a company to get high financial gains. The fraudster assigned Ghavghave various tasks and assured him of substantial refunds. Over the time, Ghavghave transferred a total of Rs 35.60 lakh in the bank accounts as instructed by the fraudster.
However, Ghavghave realised that he had been deceived when he failed to receive any returns on his investments and was unable to contact the fraudster. He then filed a complaint with the police.
The Cyber police have registered a case under Sections 420 and 34 of the Indian penal Code, read with Section 66 (d) of Information Technology Act against the fraudster.
