Dowry scourge: Hubby, in-laws arrested for woman’s suicide in Nagpur

Nagpur: Lakadganj Police in Nagpur arrested four members of a family and booked three others in a dowry death case.

According to police, Shabnam Parveen (23), daughter of Jafar Ali Manjoor Ali Shah (51), a resident of Bhoi Line, New Kamptee, was married to Mohammad Sohail Sheikh Hamid (31), a resident of Adamshah Chowk, near Amma Dargah, Lakadganj, on May 13, 2022. After one-and-a-half months of the marriage, her husband Mohammad Sohail started demanding Rs 2 lakh from her parents for purchasing a vehicle saying that she had not brought any gifts in the marriage. Her husband and in-laws started harassing her mentally and physically.

Fed-up of constant torture by her husband and in-laws, Shabnam took the extreme step by hanging in her house around 7 pm on May 21, 2024.

Following a complaint lodged by the victim’s father Jafar Ali Manjoor Ali Shah, Lakadganj Police registered a case under Sections 304(b), 489(a), 34 of the Indian Penal Code, read with Section 4 the Dowry Prohibition Act, against her husband Mohammad Sohail, brothers-in-law Shoaib Sheikh (20) and Mohammad Shadab Sheikh (25), all residents of Adamshah Chowk, mother-in-law Naseem Bano (52), sisters-in-law Bisma Sheikh Rizwan Sheikh (30) and Ujma alias Nikki Firoz Sheikh (27), and Rizwan Sheikh (36), all residents of Gittikhadan.

Later, cops arrested Mohammad Sohail, Shoaib Sheikh, Mohammad Shadab and Rizwan Sheikh and took Naseem Bano, Bisma and Ujma into custody.
