Nagpur: In a shocking case of cyber fraud, a 76-year-old retired medical officer from the Laxmi Nagar area of Nagpur was allegedly cheated of Rs 2.01 crore by cyber criminals who used fake documents and threats of police action to trap the victim.
According to police, the incident began on March 23 when the victim received a call from unidentified persons who falsely claimed that his mobile number was being used for illegal activities. To make their claims appear genuine, the accused sent forged documents and fake arrest warrants, posing as officials from the police, a bank, and the Reserve Bank of India.

The fraudsters allegedly threatened the victim that his bank accounts would be frozen as part of an investigation. They also conducted a video call and kept him under what is commonly referred to as “digital arrest,” creating fear and psychological pressure.
Under this intimidation, the victim was allegedly forced to transfer money to multiple bank accounts provided by the accused. Between March 23 and April 3, he transferred a total amount of Rs 2,01,60,647.
After realising that he had fallen victim to a cyber scam, the retired doctor approached the cyber police and lodged a complaint.
Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and other applicable provisions. Investigators have begun tracing the mobile numbers and bank accounts used by the fraudsters.
Police have also urged citizens, particularly senior citizens, to remain cautious and avoid trusting unknown callers who demand money or threaten legal action.
