Nagpur: Vidarbha continued to reel under scorching conditions on Sunday as Akola recorded the highest temperature in the country at 43.1°C, highlighting the intensifying heat across the region. Neighbouring Amravati followed closely with a maximum temperature of 42.4°C, according to data released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Private weather forecaster El Dorado Weather reported that Akola ranked as the third hottest location globally on Sunday, while Amravati stood seventh on the world heat chart. This marks the second time this season that Akola has featured among the top 10 hottest places worldwide.
Nagpur too experienced its hottest day of the season, with the mercury climbing to 41.4°C. However, despite the soaring temperatures, none of the districts in Vidarbha met the official criteria for a heatwave declaration, as the departure from normal temperatures remained around 2°C.
Several districts across the region reported maximum temperatures above the 40°C mark. Wardha recorded 42.0°C, while Washim logged 41.6°C. Chandrapur and Gadchiroli also witnessed temperatures crossing 41°C. Even areas that recorded relatively lower readings—such as Brahmapuri at 39.6°C and Bhandara at 40.0°C—remained above seasonal averages.
Meteorological data indicates a steady rise in temperatures over the past 24 hours, with many districts witnessing an increase ranging from 1°C to 2.5°C. Weather officials attributed the surge to clear skies and strong solar radiation across the region.
With no significant cloud cover or rainfall activity expected in the coming days, temperatures in Nagpur and other Vidarbha districts are likely to climb further and may touch 43°C. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Akola on April 16.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid venturing outdoors during peak afternoon hours, stay well-hydrated, and take necessary precautions to protect themselves from heat-related illnesses as the region braces for more sweltering days ahead.
