The zonal swapping ordered among the two top cops in the city has raised many eyebrows. The City Commissioner of Police KK Pathak on Monday mutually shifted DCPs of Zone-I and Zone-III, Abhinash Kumar and Nirmala Devi S, respectively, to each other’s place. The move has invited quite a lot of criticism blended with fresh round of speculations.

Insiders revealed that the decision was deliberately taken at the instance of hotel lobby which was allegedly fed up of frequent swoop down by former Zone-I DCP Abhinash Kumar, now transferred to Zone-III in south Nagpur. Zone-III DCP Nirmala Devi S. has been shifted in place of Abhinash Kumar, allegedly to go slow on hotel properties in west Nagpur.

However City police chief KK Pathak maintained that Kumar and Nirmala Devi were transferred with a view to ensure optimum utilization of resources, sources were unwilling to buy this theory. “There is no hidden agenda behind the move,” clarified Pathak. However, sources are seeing the decision in the light of recent raid by Kumar at one of the gambling dens being operated at one of the city’s posh hotel near Lokmat Square in Ramdaspeth.

It may be mentioned that Nagpur Today has been regularly reporting on the flourishing gambling dens in city’s plush hotels where elite and who’s who of society drop to soak into this sinful delight.

Sources in the police department stated that influential and financially strong hotel owners lobby of west Nagpur is likely to have prompted a senior politician to catalyse the change. “Kumar has been continuously raiding posh hotels where gambling and other activities have become common. He had nearly netted a senior politician’s son while he was gambling in a hotel. Hotel owners are wary of Kumar’s night rounds and discontinue illegal activities while he is around,” he said. Most of the top hotels are in Ramdaspeth and along Wardha Road, which is under Zone-I where Kumar served for around a year.

A section of police department also expressed surprise over the timing of the decision as CP Pathak’s transfer is almost certain and senior officials seldom make major changes while going out. “Generally, such drastic decisions by an outgoing CP always trigger rumours,” said a senior cop.
